Alright, y’all, we’re back with another hair care post and this one is specifically for my Type 4 sisters (and brothers) out there! Type 4 hair is known for its tight coils and shrinkage, and it requires a little extra TLC to keep it healthy and happy. But don’t worry – I’ve got some tips and tricks to help you on your journey to fabulous Type 4 hair.
Moisture, Moisture, Moisture
One of the biggest challenges with Type 4 hair is keeping it moisturized. Because of the tight coils, natural oils from the scalp don’t travel down the hair shaft as easily as they do for other hair types. That means you need to be intentional with how you moisturize your hair.
Â
First, use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to avoid stripping your hair of its natural oils. Then, try incorporating a deep conditioning treatment into your routine once a week. Look for products that are rich in oils like jojoba or coconut, or with ingredients like shea butter or honey that can help nourish and hydrate your hair from within.
In addition to conditioning, it’s also important to use a leave-in conditioner or moisturizer to keep your hair hydrated throughout the day. Look for lightweight options that won’t weigh down your coils, and apply them generously from roots to ends.

Don’t Be Afraid of Oils
Speaking of oils, don’t be afraid to incorporate them into your hair care routine! Type 4 hair thrives on oils, which can help seal in moisture and prevent breakage. Some great options to try include coconut oil, olive oil, and argan oil. You can apply them directly to your hair as a hair mask or mix them with your leave-in conditioner for added hydration.
Â
Remember, a little goes a long way when it comes to oils. Start with just a few drops and build up from there as needed. And if you’re worried about your hair looking greasy, focus on applying the oil to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, and avoid the roots.

Protect Your Hair While You Sleep
Another key tip for managing Type 4 hair is to protect your hair while you sleep. Friction from tossing and turning on a cotton pillowcase can lead to breakage, so consider switching to a silk or satin pillowcase instead. You can also wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf or bonnet before bed to further protect your strands.

Style with Care
When it comes to styling Type 4 hair, it’s important to be gentle and avoid styles that tug on your strands. This means avoiding tight braids or ponytails that can cause breakage. Instead, opt for looser styles like twist-outs or braid-outs. And don’t forget to moisturize your hair before styling! Using a leave-in conditioner or curl cream can help keep your hair hydrated and prevent frizz.
Detangle with Patience
One of the biggest challenges for Type 4 hair is detangling. But with a little patience and the right tools, you can make the process easier. Start by sectioning your hair and using a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush to gently remove any knots or tangles. And remember, always start from the ends and work your way up to prevent breakage.
Â
Deep Condition Regularly
Type 4Â hair requires extra moisture, which is why it’s important to deep condition on a regular basis. Look for a deep conditioner that contains natural oils like coconut or avocado oil to help hydrate your hair. Apply the conditioner to your hair and let it sit for at least 30 minutes before rinsing it out. You can also use a steam cap or sit under a hooded dryer to help the conditioner penetrate your hair more deeply.
Protective Styling
Protective styles like braids, twists, and updos can help prevent breakage and keep your hair safe from the elements. They also give you a break from constantly detangling and manipulating your hair. When choosing a protective style, make sure it’s not too tight to avoid damaging your edges or causing tension headaches. And don’t forget to moisturize your hair while it’s in the protective style to keep it healthy.
Use the LOC Method
The LOC method stands for liquid, oil, cream, and is a popular way to moisturize type 4 hair. Start by applying a water-based leave-in conditioner or spritz your hair with water. Then, apply your favorite oil like castor oil or jojoba oil to seal in the moisture. Lastly, add a cream-based product like shea butter or a curling cream to provide extra hydration and hold. This method ensures that your hair stays moisturized for days and prevents dryness and breakage.
Â
Avoid Heat Styling
Heat styling tools like flat irons and curling irons can be damaging to your hair, especially if you use them frequently. Heat can strip your hair of its natural oils and cause split ends and breakage. If you must use heat, make sure to use a heat protectant spray or serum before styling and keep the temperature low. It’s also a good idea to limit heat styling as much as you can if you’re looking to grow your hair long.
Trim Your Hair Regularly
Regular trims are crucial for maintaining healthy hair and preventing split ends. How often you should trim your hair depends on your hair type and how fast it grows, but a general rule of thumb is every 6-8 weeks. Make an appointment with your stylist or do it yourself at home if you’re comfortable with that. Trimming your hair doesn’t mean you have to chop off a lot of length. Just a little snip every few weeks can make a big difference in the health of your hair.
